SoundMeter adds support for iTestMic and iAudioInterface2

SoundMeter 6.3 and SoundMeter Pro 2.3 now officially support the iTestMic and iAudioInterface2 from Studio Six Digital.

With iTestMic, microphone sensitivity will be automatically loaded from calibration information stored in the iTestMic’s internal memory. This calibration information may have been set at the factory, or it may have been set from within an app, such as SoundMeter. In SoundMeter, it is possible to perform a sensitivity calibration without overwriting the calibration values stored in the iTestMic. SoundMeter can also store that information in the iTestMic for calibrated measurements in other apps that support the iTestMic. SoundMeter also supports selecting iTestMic’s high and low input ranges.

Note: There is currently a bug that sometimes invalidates the calibration information stored within the iTestMic for the High mic input range. This bug affects use of the iTestMic with Studio Six Digital’s own apps, as well.

With iAudioInterface2, SoundMeter can select between mic and line input types, mic and line input gain ranges, and manual volume control options. The volume control knob of the iAudioInterface2 can be assigned to the input gain or the output gain, or it can be disabled entirely to avoid accidentally invalidating the current sensitivity calibration. Also from within the app, Phantom power and digital audio output may each be enabled or disabled. SoundMeter remembers each of these settings for the next time you connect iAudioInterface2 or relaunch the app.

The new SoundMeter apps also support the Dayton UMM-6 USB measurement microphone. When the UMM-6 is detected, the user will be prompted to enter its serial number, which is typically printed on a label on the UMM-6. If a valid serial number is entered, SoundMeter will automatically download a calibration file from Dayton’s website and set the microphone sensitivity based on the information in the file.

Note: The Dayton UMM-6 must be connected to your iOS device via Apple’s USB camera adapter (either for Lightning or 30-pin dock connector, depending on your device). Sometimes the UMM-6 shows up in iOS as USB PnP Sound Device. If that happens, unplugging the UMM-6 and plugging it back in will generally solve the problem (it may take 2 or 3 tries). When properly connected, “UMM-6” will appear as the input device name in SoundMeter’s toolbar (at the top of the screen).

IOScope 5 brings data overlays, spectrum smoothing, new hardware support

IOScope 5, which is now available for download on the App Store, employs a new plotting framework for real-time data graphs and high resolution image export. The new plotting capability also enables live frequency response data to be overlaid on up to 7 frequency response curves loaded from existing data files (CSV, MAT, or text data files exported from the Frequency tab in IOScope). An additional benefit is IOScope’s ability to smooth frequency response data into fractional octave bands (1/6, 1/12, and 1/24 octave bandwidths).

Other additions to the new version of IOScope include:

– Built in support for iTestMic and iAudioInterface2 from Studio Six Digital.

– Built-in support for automatic downloading of sensitivity data for the Dayton UMM-6 USB measurement microphone.

– Support for drawing directly to an external screen (from iPad) has been removed in favor of screen mirroring, which is handled by iOS.

– Audio hardware input and output options are now presented from a separate toolbar button, which looks like a microphone, on iPad, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

– It is possible to adjust the line thickness of live and loaded frequency response data. The opacity of loaded data can also be adjusted in order to make the live data stand out in the graph.

IOScope brings two-channel transfer function and impulse response analysis to iOS.

With IOScope, measure loudspeaker impedance, frequency response, and sensitivity. Measure a room impulse response. Tune a large sound reinforcement system, time-align a set of surround sound speakers, or optimize your home stereo. Determine the actual cutoff frequencies of your latest speaker crossover circuit, or teach your students the fundamentals of Fourier analysis of dynamic systems.

Measure frequency response magnitude and phase, coherence, and group delay. Time domain functions enable you to measure impulse response and auto/cross-correlation. IOScope includes a built-in signal generator for producing suitable excitation signals to analyze your system or device under test (DUT). The reference signal can be taken from the internal signal generator or from an external source (when using an external reference, a stereo or multi-channel audio input device, connected to the dock connector, is required).

Faber Mac apps are all 64-bit, built for Yosemite

This week, all Faber apps for Mac OS received updates to improve their compatibility with Yosemite (Mac OS 10.10). Electroacoustics Toolbox 3.7, SignalScope Pro 3.7, SignalScope 3.7 and SignalSuite 4.7 are all 64-bit applications that have been built for Yosemite.

The Room Analyzer tool, available for in-app purchase in Electroacoustics Toolbox, now calculates room parameters in whole or 1/3-octave frequency bands from impulse response data that has been sampled at higher sample rates (88.2, 96, 176.4, and 192 kHz), in addition to sample rates of 44.1 and 48 kHz that were supported previously.

The Octave Analyzer tool, found in both Electroacoustics Toolbox and SignalScope Pro, also now supports the higher sample rates for real-time spectral analysis of input signals in whole or 1/3-octave frequency bands.

The Dual FFT Analyzer (only in Electroacoustics Toolbox) and FFT Analyzer tools now support additional dB vertical scale factors of 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, or 18 dB per division in the graphic display.

Various bugs and potential instabilities in each app have been corrected.

These new apps all require Mac OS version 10.7 or later.

SoundMeter Pro 2 is all about better hardware support

Like the recently released SignalScope Pro 4, SoundMeter Pro 2.0 can now uniquely identify USB audio devices attached to an iOS device and remember your settings for each audio device each time it is connected. Additionally, version 2 includes direct support for the miniDSP UMIK-1 USB measurement microphone. Sensitivity calibration and frequency response data for the UMIK-1 can be downloaded automatically, just by entering the UMIK-1’s serial number. Making calibrated sound level measurements is as easy as plugging in the UMIK-1 and typing in its serial number (the serial number only needs to be entered once, after which SoundMeter Pro will remember the microphone sensitivity).

SoundMeter Pro 2 supports manually switching between available audio inputs and outputs (i.e. if a headset microphone is connected, as well as a USB microphone, SoundMeter Pro allows you to manually switch between the built-in microphone, the headset microphone, and the USB microphone in the software without connecting or disconnecting any hardware). SoundMeter Pro 2 also supports manually switching between available microphones on devices, such as iPhones and some iPads, that have more than one built-in microphone.

Also new in SoundMeter Pro 2.0:

– Nominal input sensitivities have been updated for built-in microphones and headset inputs on iOS 8.

– On iOS 8, low, mid, and high input gain settings are available on all supported devices, for built-in microphones and headset input. Each gain setting now has an associated nominal input sensitivity. User calibrations are saved independently for each gain setting.

– A text formatting issue in MAT-file export has been corrected.

– Minor bug fixes and cosmetic enhancements.

– Apple’s Lightning to USB Camera Adapter or iPad Camera Connection Kit is required for connecting USB Audio devices to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

– SoundMeter Pro 2 requires iOS 7 or later.

SignalScope Pro 4 for iOS uniquely identifies USB audio devices

SignalScope Pro version 4 can uniquely identify USB audio devices attached to iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, and remember user settings for each device the next time it is connected. Direct support has been added for The Modal Shop’s model 333D01 USB digital accelerometer and miniDSP’s UMIK-1 USB measurement microphone. With the 333D01, SignalScope Pro automatically loads serial number and sensitivity calibration information directly from the device as soon as it is connected. When the UMIK-1 is connected, SignalScope Pro recognizes it and prompts the user for its serial number. Sensitivity calibration and frequency response data for the UMIK-1 can then be downloaded automatically, just by entering the UMIK-1’s serial number.

Another major new feature in version 4 is SignalScope Pro’s ability to load microphone frequency response data (FRD) and apply frequency response correction (FRC) to FFT spectrum measurements. FRD can be loaded for any input channel, for any kind of transducer (i.e. it’s not just for microphones). Sophisticated interpolation techniques are employed to generate a smooth frequency response
correction curve that matches the loaded data. This correction curve can then be applied to an FFT spectrum
of arbitrary length or frequency resolution.

Also new in version 4:

– SignalScope Pro directly supports The Modal Shop’s model 333D01 USB digital accelerometer, and can automatically load serial number and sensitivity calibration information directly from the device. Making calibrated acceleration measurements is as easy as plugging in the 333D01. Factory calibration information is embedded in exported audio files (from the Oscope tool) when data is acquired with the 333D01.

– SignalScope Pro directly supports the miniDSP UMIK-1 USB measurement microphone. Sensitivity calibration and frequency response data for the UMIK-1 can be downloaded automatically, just by entering the UMIK-1’s serial number. Making calibrated sound level measurements is as easy as plugging in the UMIK-1 and typing in its serial number (the serial number only needs to be entered once, after which SignalScope Pro will remember the microphone sensitivity).

– Additional dB scales of 3, 6, 12, 15, and 18 dB per div are now supported by the FFT analyzer. Also, when adjusting the dB scale manually, the dB offset will always be set as a multiple of the scale so that 0 dB is always available in the vertical axis labels.

– Minor bug fixes and cosmetic enhancements.

– Apple’s Lightning to USB Camera Adapter or iPad Camera Connection Kit is required for connecting USB Audio devices to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

– SignalScope Pro 4 requires iOS 7 or later.

Looking for the best sound level meter app

Last year, researchers at NIOSH (the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) began looking at mobile sound level meter apps, hoping to find that such apps could be suitable for occupational noise measurements. After defining specific criteria to qualify sound level meter apps as suitable for their tests, they set out to find matching apps for  iOS, Android, and Windows-based mobile devices. Ten iOS apps, out of over 130 available, were examined as part of their research. Of 62 Android apps downloaded for examination, only 4 apps partially met their criteria. No Windows-based apps qualified.

The results of the study were recently published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (JASA). According to the published article, “The evidence suggests that for A-weighted data, SoundMeter is the app best suited for occupational and general purpose noise measurements. In addition to having the smallest mean difference for the A-weighted data, SoundMeter had the narrowest distribution of differences…”

The article concludes, “This study showed that certain sound measurement apps for Apple smartphones and tablets may be considered accurate and reliable to be used to assess occupational noise exposures. Android and Windows developers do not offer apps that meet the functionality needed for occupational noise assessments.”

Faber Acoustical announces SoundMeter Pro for iOS

Building on the success of SoundMeter, which debuted on the iPhone App Store in August of 2008, Faber Acoustical has announced the release of SoundMeter Pro. SoundMeter Pro turns your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch into a handheld data-logging sound level meter (SLM), data-logging noise dosimeter, and real-time analyzer (RTA).

SoundMeter Pro works with built-in or external measurement microphones to deliver reliable sound level measurements, including time-weighted and equivalent sound levels in addition to percentile-exceeded sound levels and noise dose. Measured levels can be logged at intervals as small as 0.1 seconds for durations of up to two weeks (longer measurement durations may require larger logging intervals). The built-in Octave tool performs sound level measurements in whole or 1/3-octave frequency bands.

In a recent article published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, NIOSH researchers found that, out of over 130 sound measurement apps for iOS, “SoundMeter is the app best suited for occupational and general purpose noise measurements.” SoundMeter Pro builds on everything SoundMeter has to offer.

With the built-in or headset microphone, SoundMeter Pro can measure peak sound levels of up to approximately 130 dB. Results may vary between iOS devices and headset microphones. External microphones may enable the measurement of much higher sound levels.

SoundMeter Pro also includes various features that users have come to expect from Faber apps, including the ability to save measurement data to CSV, TXT, or MAT files, save measurement displays to high resolution PDF files, switch between three different color schemes, and calibrate microphone input sensitivity. Exported data files may be retrieved from the iOS device via iTunes File Sharing or by enabling the app’s built-in file server and downloading the files to another device or computer via a standard web browser. The built-in signal generator tool further extends SoundMeter Pro’s utility by producing any of various test signals, including white noise, pink noise, frequency sweeps, and periodic waveforms.

Faber Acoustical has simultaneously announced the availability of SoundMeter 5.0. The new version of SoundMeter adds support for a new Data Logging Upgrade, which is available via in-app purchase. SoundMeter Pro includes all the functionality of SoundMeter 5 with all its available in-app purchase upgrades. Although both apps run on iOS 6, each also features a user interface tailored for iOS 7.

NOTE: Although it has been designed to do so, SoundMeter Pro is not guaranteed to meet ANSI or IEC standards for sound level meters. These standards require conformance of the entire measurement system, including software, hardware and microphones.

The built-in and headset microphones are suitable for certain, basic sound level measurements, but high precision external microphones may also be used with appropriate audio accessory hardware. Even though default sensitivity values are included for the built-in and headset microphones, for best results, SoundMeter Pro should be calibrated before use. Sound levels may be off by a few dB when using the default microphone sensitivity.

RoomScope 2.1 validates reverberation time measurements

In version 2.1, RoomScope now presents a nonlinearity parameter to offer additional guidance on the validity of each acoustic decay parameter (T20, T30, T60, EDT). Values of greater than 10 ‰ (per mille, or parts per thousand) indicate that the estimated reverberation or decay time may be suspect, or that integration limits may need to be adjusted manually to obtain a more accurate result.

Electroacoustics Toolbox 3.5 adds AppleScript support for room acoustics

Version 3.5 of Electroacoustics Toolbox extends AppleScript support to the Room Analyzer tool (sold separately), which enables automated room acoustics analysis and data retrieval via AppleScript. Now, in addition to automating the acquisition of impulse response data, users can employ AppleScript to control the analysis of that data to extract relevant room acoustics parameters.

With increased automation capabilities, the Room Analyzer tool also now takes additional steps to verify the accuracy of acoustic decay time estimates, including T20, T30, T60, and EDT. For each of these parameters a nonlinearity value (in per mille, or parts per thousand) indicates how close the acoustic decay approaches a straight line, which is the basic assumption in reverberation time estimation. A nonlinearity value greater than 10 suggests that the user might want to take a closer look at the data to determine whether adjustments must be made to the integration limits for the decay curve to get a more accurate measurement.

Version 3.5 also addresses some issues, which include the following:

– Room acoustics parameters are properly plotted across 1/3-octave bands in the Room Analyzer tool.

– Radio buttons are properly deselected in the IR source drawer of the Room Analyzer tool when switching between Dual FFT or Oscilloscope measurements.

A bug has been addressed that could prevent the “Try” buttons in the project window from successfully opening a trial of the Noise Dosimeter or Room Analyzer tool.

SoundMeter 4.1 offers percentile-exceeded sound levels

SoundMeter 4.1, which is now available for download on the App Store, offers percentile-exceeded sound levels (Lx) via in-app purchase.

With the new upgrade, SoundMeter can display L10, L50, L90, or any percentile between 1 and 99. Percentile exceeded sound levels are also available in the Octave Analyzer tool (sold separately).

Also new in SoundMeter is the ability to set the meter to automatically stop after an arbitrary amount of elapsed time from 1 second to two weeks.

The Dosimeter and Octave Analyzer tools (sold separately) can also be set to automatically stop after a user-defined period of time.
